Types of Gas Fireplaces
Wondering what type of gas fireplace you should install? Below is some information on the two different fireplace options that Rodman's offers, including how
they work and what you might need to know before you put one in your home.
Direct Vent Gas Fireplace
Direct vent gas fireplaces do not need a traditional chimney. This type of fireplace has a completely sealed combustion chamber, which allow it to vent out
through a side wall, or up through the ceiling. This makes installation more flexible, since you have more options for where to put your fireplace, and it
helps keep installation costs down. Direct vent gas fireplaces bring their combustion air in from the outside of your home, and also vent to the outside. This
means they do not use up warm house air, and do not compete with other household appliances or your furnace for combustion air. They are your best choice if you
want to install a gas fireplace in the basement.

Natural Vent Gas Fireplace
Natural vent (or natural draft) gas fireplaces take in air from inside the home to use for combustion, and then vent to the outside. They are also known as
B-Vent fireplaces. If you already have a vertical chimney, you can just use a less expensive flexible aluminum or stainless steel liner to vent the exhaust up
through the chimney; otherwise, you need a B-Vent pipe that goes through the wall and then up above the roof. Natural vent gas fireplaces also have a draft
hood or draft diverter, which requires extra air from your house to isolate the burner from changing draft conditions. The draft hood draws more or less air
in as required, which ensures that the burner has a constant air supply, regardless of outside temperature changes or wind.
